This project involved design of a new three span bridge (190’, 250’ and 160’) over the Beaver River, at the site of a former bridge, to connect SR-0051 and SR-0018/0065. The bridge foundations were bid as a Design-Build package. Responsibilities included design of abutment foundations and alternate top to bottom hammerhead pier designs. The pier designs incorporated a “Flexible Pier-Foundation System” to accommodate fixed-fixed bearing arrangements with combined “flexibility” of three mechanisms: bending of the pier stem, footing rotation due to axial deformation of piles, and lateral displacement of pile group.
