Mackin was responsible for the rehabilitation of the Smithfield Street Bridge, a National Historic Landmark and over 125-years old. The seven-span bridge over the Monongahela River consists of two steel lenticular truss spans (one of the few multiple long-span bridges of this type remaining in the United States), one steel pony truss span, and four steel deck girder spans. The goal of rehabilitation of this major river crossing was to preserve and enhance its historic integrity while updating it to modern standards. This entailed rehabilitating the bridge and approach roadways, increasing the number of travel lanes, and upgrading the load limit, permitting light trucks and Port Authority buses to use the bridge. The project won the 1996 AISC Award for Rehabilitated Bridge.
