This project was a contractor (Golden Triangle) initiated alternative for the design and construction of a box culvert structure to carry an interstate ramp under two existing, four span interstate bridges (open to traffic), allowing the bridges to be removed and replaced with embankment fill to eliminate phased rehabilitation of the bridges and construction of traffic control cross-overs. The project required horizontal and vertical alignment modifications to the ramp to provide required lane and shoulder widths and vertical clearance within the new structure, and provided a minimum of 4” of clearance between the new and existing bridges. A cast-in-place box culvert was designed and constructed in 5 segments to accommodate a vertical curve of the box and roadway. The bridge structures were removed and new interstate pavement placed during weekend single lane closures. This was a coordinated effort between the Contractor, PennDOT District 12-0, PennDOT Central Office, FHWA, and Mackin Engineering.
