Mackin completed the 78 acre Master Plan for The Canonsburg Town Park; a community asset that not only provides the Borough of Canonsburg as a central green space, but it stands as an icon to the history of the area. Since 1929 the Town Park has provided the residents of Canonsburg with a place to exercise, swim, socialize and experience the tranquility of the natural environment.
The present day character of the Town Park is a reflection of the past 80+ years; site amenities have been added and removed; roadways, parking lots and pavilions have been built; vegetation has been cut back and canopy trees have matured. These processes are typical within all recreational areas, and if left unplanned, have the opportunity to negatively impact the overall function and aesthetic appeal of the park.
The Master Plan was developed based upon current site conditions of facilities, the borough’s maintenance and operation capacity, the community’s needs and desires for new recreation opportunities and programs, and through public and municipal input during the design process.
Park and recreational facilities, located within a community, preserve the natural environment, positively effect adjacent land values and improve the well being of residents and visitors.
The result of this project was a comprehensive planning tool for the Borough to successfully meet the recreational needs of the community while maintaining the park’s natural environment, cultural heritage and aesthetic value.
