The project was part of a National Park Heritage Plan and included an update to Cumberland Maryland’s 1998 Downtown Plan. The purpose of this project was to develop a comprehensive update to the existing Canal Place Heritage Area Management Plan to provide a long-term planning document to guide further development of the heritage area. Mackin’s Landscape Architecture and Traffic Departments focused our services to improving pedestrian and bicycle access from the heritage park to the downtown business district in the City.
Areas of study included way–finding signs, parking, pedestrian & cycle routes, utility infrastructure, and retail and community redevelopment. Mackin’s landscape architects, traffic engineers and planners completed design plans for public spaces, community and economic redevelopment projects including safe and accessible routes for multimodal access connecting Canal Place and the GAP Trail to the city’s restaurants, services and shops.
